Figure 1.--This American boy wears a news suit for his confirmation. HBC believes the photograph was probably taken in the 1890s. Note the boys cap on the chair. |
HBC is not sure at this time when confirmations became an event for which a boy was dressed up in a new suit and wore arm ribbons. At this time most of the Confirmation suits HBC has noted have been 20th century images. The earliest image noted to date looks to have been taken in the 1890s. Confirmations of course are acchurch ritual dating back to the early days of the church. HBC is unsure how boys were dressed for confirmation before the modern era.

I have not yet noted images of boys' confirmationd from the 1880s.
The earliest confirmatin I have noted look to be 1890s suits. The boy is wearing a standard kneepants suit without the fancier frill a young boy at the time may have worn.
HBC is unsure how boys were dressed for confirmation before the modern era.
Given the fact that the boys taking their confirmations were older boys than those taking first communion, the suits worn reflected that difference.
Fauntleroy suits were not normally worn as they were primarily for younger boys.
Sailor suits were worn for confirmation. They were more commonly worn for first communiins, but some boys did wear them for confirmation as well. These seems to have been particularly common in France and Spain. Agauin the fact that many boys bu age 12 or 13 were no linger wearing sailor suits, expalins while the sailor suit was not as common as regular suits for a boys' communion.
Most boys being confirmed wore suits, with jackets must like their fathers. The pants, however, were quite varied, depaending on the chronolical period an country. Boys wore kneepants, knickers, short pants and long pants.
