Anguilla School Uniform

Figure 1.--

Anguillan uniforms have basically followed British styles. As in all the former British Caribbean colonies, all elementary-age boys and presumably many secondary-age boys wore short pants. Knee socks were common. I'm not sure when styles began to differ from British styles. Girls uniforms are still basically British, but boys styles have changed. There is only one secondary school on Anguilla. The boys wear a simple uniform of tan shirts and darker tan long pants. None of the boys wear shorts. There are seven elementary schools. The schools I saw also have long pants uniforms for boys, but I am told that shorts are worn by younger boys at some elementary schools. I am not sure why long pants are so common in a tropical colony, especially a British colony. One teacher explained that many boys prefer the long pants even in the heat because they feel more mature. Leather shoes are worn at the high school which do not permit sneakers, but sneakers are permitted at some elementary schools.

Most of the schools are English or Scottish, but schools in Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and Ulster are also included. The pictures show the uniforms worn at many different schools.
