Basic Information

The Domspatzen boys choir have become an integral part of the Regensburger culture life. By the applause and the acknowledgment, which they harvest regularly with their appearances, the singing boys are considered as one of the most well-known "seeing or hearing worthynesses " of Regensburg. Due to the many expanded concert journeys with their own bus or--not at all too rarely - also with the airplane into the whole world, the Domspatzen boys are called "The Singing Ambassadors of the City ". Let's emphasize concert tours to the USA, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Phillipins and South Korea. The travel-merry boys are of course also at home in all European countries. The "Dom sparrows" are cordially taken up everywhere. The clothing they wear during their appearances are to them just as well as the choir robe for the liturgical services in St. Peter cathedral. From gregorian chorals up to the music of our days--the repertoire of religious and profane choir works is broadly varied. This balanced mixture, apart from their excellent vocal performances, makes the Domspatzen so unique.

History

The choir has a 1,000 year tradition. The Domspatzen choir celebrated in 1976 its 1000 years existence. In year 975 AD Bishop Wolfgang separated the diocese from the Abbey St. Emmeram and established residence with the school pupils in the "Alten Bischofshof ". Since this time there is a cathedral school, which developed quite early into an education place of high repute. Among the most important functions of the pupils was the liturgical organization of the services in the cathedral church. The today's nest of the Regensburger Domspatzen is the legacy of Dr. Theobald Schrems, which worked from 1924 to 1963 as musical director of the cathedral choir. More than 40 years ago he created the common house for school, boarding school and choir - and thus the prerequisite for the today's high level of the Domspatzen. Starting from 1964 George Ratzinger took over the direction of the choir. During his 30 years of activity he could strengthen and expand the internationally good reputation of the Domspatzen. He shaped that typically soft and natural "Regensburger sound ". George Ratzinger transferred the german oldest boy choir in best condition to his successor Roland Buechner - for a successful start into a new millenium.
