United States Boy Choirs: Individual Choirs

HBC has noted a very substntial number of boy choirs in America. Some have come and gone after only functioning for a few years. Others have now been functioning for several decades. The choral music tradition in the United States is young, but there are a large number of American choirs, sponsored by both church and secular groups. In fact there are probably more boy choirs in America than any other countries. Quite a number have been organized and disbanded, but an increasingly large number have set firm roots in their local communities. There are few residential boy choirs, however, as is the case in a few European countries--especially England. The American choirs, however, generally lack the destinctive dress of many European boy choirs. Many have adopted blazers, loking rather like English school boys. Only a few have distintive regional outfits. HBC has noted the following American boy choirs, but it is hardly a complete list. Many more have functioned in the past, but are no longer functioning today.

Albuquerque Boy Choir (New Mexico)

The Albuquerque Boy Choir is a non-profit organization that gives boys a chance to grow through musical learning, self-discipline, performance demeanor and working together for the common joy of singing. The choir, which celebrates that brief but magical time of a boy's life when his voice is clear and pure, also gives him an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the larger community. The choir is one of the oldest and most established bou choirs in America. For over 60 years, thousands of boys in Albuquerque, New Mexico have temporarily put aside their baseball mitts, basketballs, books, kites--now video games--to channel their considerable energies into making music and MAGIC. The choir has performed with the American Boychoir, Chicago Children's Choir, Colorado Springs Childrens Chorale, Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Boys Choir, Santa Fe Opera, Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus and others. The choir has sung on TV and radio--including live, nationwide radio broadcasts in the early days of NBC Radio--from the depths of Carlsbad Caverns and the cliffs overlooking Grand Canyon. In June of 1995, they sang for (and met) President Bill Clinton during services at Foundry Methodist in Washington, DC. In June of 1999, they returned to ashington to sing in the Naval Academy Chapel. In May, 1998, the Concert Choir received "Outstanding" Ratings (Best of Show) for both its Classical and Show Choir performances at the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo, Texas. In June of that year, the Choristers sang in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and the Concert Choir sang in Gloucester Cathedral, St. James Church and Windsor Parish Church, all in England.

Amarillo Boys' Choir (Texas)

Welcome to the sights and sounds of our Amarillo Boy Choirs, the 2000 season celebrating 11 years of opportunities in music for boys in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles! Organized following a summer workshop at Amarillo College, the program has grown far beyond the expectations of the brave souls who first formed the group in 1989 and who signed a $3,699.80 bank loan in 1990 to purchase uniforms and other necessities. The boys continue to earn performance trophies every year, and the organization is changing to better share the sounds of boys singing with our communities and the world. The original choir of 40 boys has since grown into two choirs and a small group called "Spotlight" which does lighter music and entertains at banquets and parties. "Spotlight" competed for the first time at Greater Southwest Music Festival in May 1999 and earned a rating of 99 in the "Show Choirs" division. These boys put in extra hours of rehearsal to provide entertainment at events where using a full choir would be impractical. Boys may audition into our program as early as third grade. Although the choirv is a traditional boychoir of unchanged voices (SSAA), several members have been able to sing in our choirs for 6 years. After Amarillo Boy Choirs, the boys may continue singing in some excellent public school choirs in the Amarillo area and in their various churches. There are also occasional opportunities with Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Opera, and little theatres in Amarillo and at West Texas A&M University. Amarillo Boy Choirs have kept tuition for individual boys at an extremely low level, so far, so that as many boys as possible can participate. In addition, there are a limited number of partial scholarships.

American Boy Choir (New Jersey)

The American Boy Choir is based in Princeton, N.J. The American Boychoir runs its own boarding choir school for the choirboys and is the only residential boys' choir in America. The school actually has three choirs, two touring and one resident. The boys range in age from 9 to 14.

Archdiocesan Boychoir of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania)

A Brief History. The ABC was founded by Dr. Peter LaManna in 1969 at the request of His Eminence, John Cardinal Krol at the suggestion of Father William J. Smith. The present membership of about eighty boys, ages of 7 to 16, represents the five county area of the Archdiocese. In addition to participation in liturgies at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul and local parishes, the boys maintain an external concert schedule which has taken them to various parts of the United States and Canada. In 1995 the choir had the rare and exciting privilege of singing at the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal, for processions and special masses in which over one-half million pilgrims participated. In addition to local television appearances, the choir has released two recordings on CD/Cassette - "Songs of the Cherubim" which contains favorite chants, motets, and choruses of the church, including the Pergulasi Stabat Mater, and a Christmas recording, entitled "Midnight Mass". A third recording is soon to be released. We took a tour of Ireland in 1997. The people in Knock took to us joyfully. We were hoping to sing both a concert and a mass, but sang two masses instead (which is good). While entering the shrine to sing our concert, there was a mass going on. They just finished the Gospel, and we sang the "Ave Verum" (on the CD) for communion. After the mass, we sang "Lady of Knock", which many of the people joined in on. It was just one unexpected twist to our pilgrimage. During April, 1997, a relative of the Boy Choir presented a copy of our CD to our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. He sent our director a letter of thanks (as he does for every gift) for the CD. In 1998 the choir traveled throughout the Province of Quebec, Canada and during the summer of 1999, the choir toured Rome, Italy to begin the celebration of the Millennium. This past summer, June-July 2000, the Boy Choir returned to Fatima, Portugal, in order to celebrate the beatification of the two little shepherd children, Francisco and Jacinta Marto.

Barrington Scout Choir

Various groups have sponsored boys' choirs in America, including one group in the 1970s and 80s which put together a choir of some distinction. This is the only choir sponsored by a Scout group that HBC knows of achieved a high level of choral eccellence. They performed in their Scout uniforms as well as blazers, and choral robes. The group grew out of a Boy Scout troop in Barrington, Rhode Island, headed by Guy Vance Carpenter in the late 1950s.

Figure 3.--The Berkshire Concert Choir is seen here with both the boy and adult members. The boys wear short pants suits and kneesocks.

Berkshire Boy Choir

An influential choir in the development of boy choirs in America was the Berkshire Boy Choir. The choir was founded in the summer of 1967 and after intensive rehearsal gave a series of concerts under the direction of George Guest of St. John's College, Cambridge, England. The Choir won golden opinions from the press, and the LP recording made whilst the Choir was in session remains as an eloquent testimony to George Guest's genius in welding a group of voices into a choir of distinction in a very short time. A traditional uniform was selected for the boys of dark short pants suits and kneesocks giving them the look of an English boy choir.

Boston Boy Choir (Massachusetts)

Boys’ choirs were never a large part of the Catholic tradition in the United States. The choirmaster at St. Paul’s Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts established a choir school to help preserve and promote sacred classical music (1963). The St. Paul Boys Choir is the only one of its kind in the country. There are no other Catholic choir schools. There are a variety of reasons for this. Nusucal tastes are chnging. The cost of operating a school are very high. And given the fact tht boys' voices are now chanhing earlier, they can now sing for a shorter period, raising the effective costs of training thm. Many choirs are now mixed gender choirs and gil choirs are now ell estblished. As late as the early 1970s, the St. Paul Choir School in Cambridge, Mass (the leading boychoir in the Archdiocese of Boston) had as a uniform for non-church concerts navy blue blazers, ties, gray flannel short pants, navy blue knee socks, and black shoes. In church, of course, the boys worse choir robes. A contributor rembers a concert in the spring of 1971, and that's how they were dressed.

Cathedral Choir School (New York)

The Cathedral Choir School has no connection whatsoever to Litchfield Cathedral. HBC had confused the two choirs. Cathedral Choir School was founded by Jura Litchfiled in Rochester, New York not England. The Cathedral Choir School, an independent, ecumenical vocal ensemble of trebles and adults, is modeled after British cathedral and collegiate choirs. One source indicated that the school was founded in 1986 by Jura Litchfield with LIFT grant administered by Arts for Greater Rochester, the school is dedicated to singing choral works written for worship. The Cathedral Choir School is a member of the Greater Rochester Choral Consortium, whose membership includes Madrigalia, Muscia Spei, the Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus, the Rochester Oratorio Society and others. The 1999-2000 season will include five performances of “Thys Yool” with the Society for Early Music at the Memorial Art Gallery, a Service of Lessons and Carols, Lenten Services at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word and St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in April, and a Spring Concert in May.

Columbus Boys Choir (Ohio)

We do not have any information on the history of the Columbus Boy Choir. The Choir reports, "The Columbus Boy Choir regularly performs for capacity audiences at each of its major concerts and reaches over 3000 Georgia citizens each year through its numerous guest appearances for civic organizations, churches, and business functions. The Choir has frequently collaborated with other area musical organizations including the Columbus College Schwob Department of Music, the Columbus Civic Chorale, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Beyond providing entertainment for others, the Columbus Boy Choir serves its members by placing great emphasis on self-discipline and the building of a positive self-image that will give the boy self-confidence as he grows. The Choir operates an annual Summer Training Camp in August. During the course of this week-long overnight camping experience the boys develop essential singing and performance skills and begin the process of working cooperatively to create a unified, well-disciplined choir team. Further information is available on the Choir's website. [Smith]

(The) Golden Gate Boys' Choir (California)

The Golden Gate Boys Choir & Bellringers is a musical organization for boys, providing them with an outstanding opportunity to develop their talent and general musical appreciation skills through a graduated, thorough course of musical study. The GGBC teaches repertoire, vocal skills, and knowledge of music theory and uses these skills in performance, locally, nationally, and internationally. Members learn cooperation, independence, leadership, cultural appreciation. They also gain self-esteem, learn how to set priorities, make responsible decisions, relate to their peers, and to present themselves in public with grace and dignity.

Grace Episcopal Cathedral (Califonnia)

The Grace's Episcopal Cathedral in San Francisco has a series of frescoes on the walls of the nave depicting the progress of Chritianity in America. One shows the cathedral choir school. An English visitor provided a photograph commenting tht the unform look rather like that of English cathedral choir schools, except that the boys wear long instead of short trousers.".

Harlem Boys Choir (New York)

The Harlem Boys Choir is one of the best know American boys' choirs. It is also the largest. The Choir was founded in 1969. There were about 550 boys and girls participating in the choir and school in 2004. A group composed mostly of Afro American boys from Harlem, a New York City neigborhood that is one of black America's best known communities. The Choir has been a possitive force in the lives of many boys with under-privlidged backgrounds. Most of the children are poor and comne from single-parent homes. About 6,000 children as of 2004 have been involved in the Boys' Choir, the Girls' Choir, and the Academy. The times I've seen them they have worn maroon blazers and black long pants. The children are recruited from inner city schools. A school, the Choir Academy of Harlem, has been founded as part of the New York City School System to support the children involved in the Choir. The Academy places an emohasis on discipline and hard work. There is a uniform and dorags and baggy pants are discouraged. About 98 percent of the Academy graduates attend college--a phenomenal success in a community where many children do not finish higschool. The success of the Choir is in large measure due to the hard work of it's founder and long-time director, Walter Turnbull. Unfortunately the reputation of the Choir has been affected by the conviction of staff member for abusing one of the boys. Choir officials apparently did not take complaints from the boy seriously. This inceident could possibly affect the future of the Choir.

Honolulu Boys' Choir

We note a photograph taken during the Memorial Day at the Punchbowl, Pearl Harbor Memorial (May 28, 2005). The Honolulu Boys Choir is performing with the Walls of the Missing in the background. The American Battle Monument Commission was established by Congress in 1923 "to honor the accomplishments of the American Armed Forces where they have served". The Honolulu Memorial is the only ABMC cemetery and memorial located on American soil. The "Punchbowl", as it is affectionately nicknamed, is the official cemetery and memorial site of the missing for those who died in the Central Pacific in World War II.

Land of Lakes Choirboys (Minnesota)

Minnesota is the "Land of Lakes," and the Land of Lakes Choirboys take great pride in representing their state as they travel throughout the country. These mini good-will ambassadors have delighted their many and varied audiences for over twenty years, and in that time have become widely acclaimed as one of the truly outstanding boychoirs of its kind in the nation. The choir makes its home in the city of Elk River, Minnesota. The Indians called it "Wich a wan" (where two rivers join). Early settlers built a trading post near the junction of the two rivers, the Elk and the Mississippi, and called the post Elk River. That tiny outpost in the rough Minnesota Territory of 1849 is now considered part of the Twin Cities suburban area. The city is a recognized leader in many respects, and certainly a leader in cultural activities. The community boasts a city band, a fine community theater organization, many fine church choirs, and school music programs ranging from elementary school through high school that are truly excellent. The Land of Lakes Choirboys is yet another of these cultural offerings. While the choir is based in Elk River, it draws its participants from many Minnesota communities including Albertville, Anoka, Champlin, Dayton, Monticello, St. Michael, Rogers and Zimmerman. Each season many hopeful youngsters give auditions in an effort to gain a place in the choir, and each season boys travel greater distances to join. In addition to the wide repertoire that each choirboy learns, he is subjected to lessons in discipline and personal neatness. The boys learn to relate to people from all walks of life, from varied backgrounds, and with different interests. The travel the boys enjoy is a history and geography lesson second to none and a choirboy becomes sensitive to beauty and knowledgeable as to what our great country has to offer. In short, the choir offers a character building program that is nothing short of incredible.

Melody Bells

Modern hand bell ringing began in Tudor England (16th century). It made the transitioin to Amerrica (early-19th century). We notice a family hand bell group (late-19th century). Unlike voical chiirs, most hand b=bell ringers have been adults. We have only found one children's hand bell group--the Melody Bells. It is the largest and youngest English handbell choir in the world. It is composed of boys and girls age 7-17. There were about 40 members, but only about 15 boys. The ringers wear kahki short pantss, fawn knee socks and leather penny loafers. It is composed of children from church groups in Rvansville, Indiana. I saw them perform at Wolf Trap during September 1987. They also appeared at the White House Chridstmas events.

(Robert) Mitchell Boy Choir

Robert Mitchell's mother insisted that he learn the church oprgan so he cold participate in church services. This became a career making decesion. Soon 12-year old Robert was playing the pipe organ in movie theaters. Silent films needed the musical accompaniment. Throughout the 1930s he worked at various radio stations. Then he formed the Mitchell Boy Choir. The Choir appeared in quite a number of films, including several important films. The first film we know of is :Blondie in Society" (1941), an early film in the long-running Blondie series. Theplay a Boy Ranger troop. The subsequentb films we know of are: "The Al Jolson Story" (1946), “Angels with Dirty Faces” with James Cagney, “The Bishop’s Wife", and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby. The Choir also made recorded with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra as well as other notable singers. His works with the Choir earned him various honors including a Silver Medal from Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco, a Medal from the Pope, and an award the Boy Scouts of America.

Montgomery County Bouchoir (Maryland)

The Montgomery County Boychoir was founded in 1985 with a mission to give talented young voices an opportunity to further their experience and to expand public awareness of treble choir literature. Currently composed of 25 members, ages 8-14, the Boychoir has been successful in facing the challenge of their mission. Along with workshops led by Henry Leck and Rebecca Thompson, the boys spent an inspiring week under the direction of Dr. James Lytton, American Boychoir Director, at the 1998 Princeton Invitational Festival. Director Lynn Gregory leads the group through an annual schedule filled with performances for the public as well as professional educational organizations such as the Virginia Music Educators Association conference. Superior ratings have been achieved at numerous festivals the choir has traveled to along the East Coast. Boychoir members are encouraged to commit themselves to excellence while developing their artistry. Through performance and weekly rehearsals the Boychoir continues to explore literature, enlighten audiences and enjoy the many gifts of music. The Preparatory Choir is designed to be the first stage in the Montgomery Boychoir system. The many lessons and experiences the boys will gain with this choir allow them to move on to, and enjoy the benefits of, the touring Boychoir. Through Preparatory Choir, the boys experience many facets of music. It provides a rich assortment of musical activities designed to promote language development, symbolic thinking, and coordination while cultivating the boys' creativity during choral activities. In this choir, the students are introduced to a variety of general music activities implementing the Kodaly Methodology. The activities include singing, developing basic music reading skills, games, and movement. This is a non-touring choir; the Prep Choir will perform on the two major Boychoir concerts.

Newark Boys Chorus School (New Jerseu)

Choir similar to the Harlem Boys Choir, composed mostly of black children drawn from the inner city. I saw a TV show about their trip to Japan in 1990? to participate in performances with French and Hong Kong choirs. The Newark boys wore blue blazers and grey long pants with colorful African scarves. Their were some charming interviews with the younger boys. They were amazed by how clean Japan was, one boy said he was embarassed about how dirty Newark was. One boy mentioned a consersation with one of the French choristers who was telling him about Paris. The American boy was at a loss to tell somehing about Newark. One boy noticed the little touchs of America (McDonalds, Disneyland, etc.) and decided "we must be doing something right.

Ragazzi: The Peninsula Boys Choir

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ragazzi is one of the premier boys choirs in California. It has functioned since the late 1980s. The choir has performed all over the world and various members have performed in operas such as "The Turn of the Screw", " A Midsummer Nights Dream", "Carmen" and "The Magic Flute". The boys wear long sleeved dress shirts, ties and gray, long, and dress pants for performances.

Rochester Cathedral Choir (New yorK)

The Cathedral Choir School is an private, ecumenical vocal ensemble of child trebles and adults. While new, it is modeled on the older, more established British cathedral and collegiate choirs. The Rochester Cathedral Choir School was founded in 1986 by Jura Litchfield with a LIFT grant administered by Arts for Greater Rochester. The Cathedral Choir School is dedicated to singing choral works especially written for worship. These works were written in part for treble voices. Thus a school is needed to train youthful choristers. The Rocheter Choir School is a member of the Royal School of Church Music in America, an international organization dedicated to high standards in liturgical music. It also has local affiliation with the Greater Rochester Choral Consortium. Choristers (mostly between the ages of 8 and 15) are recognized for their years of service and musical achievement with a system of ribbons and medals which they earn during the course of their tenure with the choir. The Christmas concert will feature Benjamin Britten's, "Ceremony of Carols", in addition to works by Holst, Kodaly, and others.

Singing Boys of Pennsylvania

Texas Boys Choir (US) One Washington Post reviewer compared them to angels. Performs classical and folk tunes related to American history. The have rather Elizabethan choir robes, but usually change into jeans and western shirts for the folk renditions. One reviwer mentioned "colonial" gear, I'm not sure what the meant by that.

St. John's Boys' Choir (Colorado)

We note what looks like a turn-of-the 20th century portrait of a bpy's choir. It is marked on the back St. John's Boys' Choir. As the photograph came fron Denver, we assume it was the choir from St. John's Episcopal (Anglican) Cathedral in Denver. The Cathedral has an active music program. There was a revival of boys' choirs in England beginning in the mid-19th century. It was centered in the great Anglican cathedrals. This interest had spread to America by the late-19th century. The St. John's Boys' Choir was one example of this movement. The boys in the portrait wear Eton collars with their choir sdurplices asnd robes. Eton collars were widely worn by boys at the time. The photograph is undated, but the dresses worn by the women working woth the choir help to give us an appromixate date. The Cathedral continues to have a very active youth music program, including both a boys' choir and a girls' choir as well a junior children's choir.

St. Malachy Boy Choir

One source reports, "I know that the New York Archdiocese has a choir school at St. Malachy’s in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. It was begun by Fr. Richard Baker. It has both boys and girls. They often sing at the cathedral. Such boys choirs and schools were common in the early part of the 20th Century when women were not allowed to sing on the altar of from the choir loft."

St Peter's (North Carolina)

St Peter's is located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

St. Thomas Boys Choir (California)

Here we have a photograph of the St. Thomas Boy Choir in 1927. It was located in Hollywood California. Unfortunately we know nothing more about the choir. It looks to be a local church choir. The sung in chouir robes, but I don't blieve that they had any other uniform.

(The) Singingboys of Rockford (Illinois)

The Singing Boys of Rockford, IL is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization which serves approximately 70 boys ages 7-18 in the northern Illinois area. Hundreds of members have participated in this unique program which was founded in 1964 by Linden Lundstrom (1913-1996) and continues today to be dedicated to its original purpose: to provide a quality musical education, while instilling in each member the rewards of self-discipline, responsibility, and dedication towards common goals. KANTOREI has performed with a wide variety of local ensembles including the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Bach Chamber Choir, Rockford Chamber Players Brass Ensemble, Rockford Lutheran Choral Union, and many other professional singers and instrumentalists. Other state-line appearances have included the "On the Waterfront" Festival, the "Young at Heart" festival, Magic Monday, the Children's Arts Fair, Concerts in the Park series and "First Night Rockford." As Rockford's "Singing Ambassadors", KANTOREI has actively participated in programs which cross cultural and language barriers, foster international friendships, create an appreciation for various lifestyles and customs, and promote international understanding through music.

(The) Wilmingtom Boys' Choir (North Crolina)

The Wilmington Boys Choir, a non-profit, nonsectarian ensemble was organized in 1984 and is dedicated to providing boys eight and up with the opportunity to rehearse and perform choral music from a variety of musical styles, including classical, modern, folk, and spiritual. The boys audition for a place in the choir or are referred by a public school music teacher. They rehearse one or two afternoons per week, juggling school work, music lessons, sports, and church activities. They work hard, take pride in their accomplishments, and reap many rewards as well. History and Background. The Wilmington Boys Choir was organized in 1984 by its former director, Mr. David Hines. The choir has had four directors, Mr. Hines from 1984 to 1990, Mr. Reggie Rushing from 1990 to 1991, Mr. William Remele from 1991 and the current director, Ms. Sandy Errante who has been with the choir since 1993. The choir has traveled and performed at the Duke University Chapel, East Carolina University for the American Choral Directors, Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia, and New York City. They have performed in Washington, DC at the State Capitol, US Senate Building and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 1993, under the direction of Mr. Remele, the choir traveled to Doncaster, England, Wilmington's sister city. While in England, it performed at various places including Westminster Abbey. In early January 1993, also under the direction of Mr. Remele, we sang four Christmas concerts at the Biltmore Estate near Ashville performing "Britten's CEREMONY OF CAROLS" For the 1996 Christmas season, the choir performed with Ms. Judy Collins at Thalian Hall, Wilmington, NC. Later in the spring of 1997, the choir performed in Richmond, VA and in the National Cathedral, Washington, DC. For their spring tour 2000, the WBC traveled to Charleston, SC and Orlando FL performing at a variety of locations along the way. The Wilmington Boys Choir is currently under the direction of Ms. Sandy Errante, who has directed the group since 1993. She is also founder and director of the Girl's Choir of Wilmington Choir of Wilmington. Her husband, Dr. Steven Errante, Conductor of the Wilmington Symphony and a member of the music faculty at UNCW, is the accompanist. The Wilmington Boys Choir is pleased to perform beautiful music in our area and to represent Wilmington in regional performances.
