Boys have provided comments on their dance experiences. A lot of keen dancers are discouraged by their friends, many of whom don't think a boy should take dancing lessons. Girls and mothers also have some useful comments about boys taking dancing lessons.
My passion is Irish stepdancing, and--Michael Flatley notwithstanding--it's difficult getting boys to take classes, whether young boys or grown men (although it is a great way to meet chicks. There are only two boys at our school, but they are both classy dancers!
You may not like this particular solution, but when Michael Flatley and his brother Pat started being teased about being dancers, they were allowed to start taking boxing lessons.
One of the guys in my Irish dance class also plays hockey, and his teammates would just tease him unmercifully about his being a dancer--until they noticed that his hockey game had improved considerably. He's quicker. He's lighter on his feet. His balance is better. Now they joke about how maybe the whole team should start taking dance! -- Ruth
