The Fine Arts: Boys' Band Costumes--Country Trends


Figure 1.--The marching band for many years was a western phenomenon. We now notice them in Japan and other Asian countries as well. Notice the different ways that the boys wear their berets. Marching bands in western countries off have military styled uniforms. Notice that the Japanese band here does not have a military look.

A band is essentially a specialized, usually small orchestra, although some can be quite large. Generally bands. Generally bands, as destinguished from full orchestras, emphasize bress, woodwind, and percussion instruments. There are many types of bands, showing there generally specialized nature. We note, for example, jazz, marching, polka, rock,and many other specialized types. American music in the 1940s was heavily influenced by Big Band music. Perghaps the most familiar type of band to many is the marching band. Many children and teenagers have participated in marching bands. Marching bands are perhaps most associated historically with European countries because of the military associations. e believe that after the Napoleonic Wars that towns and villages throughout Europe formed marching bands for civic purposes. This was by the late late-19th century also adopted in America. The story of an American town puting together a marching band was imortalized in "The Music Band". After the turn of the century marching bands became increasingly popular in America with the rise of inter-collegiate and inter-scholastic sports competitions in America. Today virtually every college/university and highschool in America has a mrching band. We now also note marching bands in other countrues like Japan. There are different kinds of bands, both set bands and marching bands. We also have a separate marching band country page. Marching bands in western countries off have military styled uniforms. The polka band is a good example. Another is the mariachi bands in Mexico. They appear to have evolved relatively recently, from musicians that played a marriage ceremonies i Jalisco.
