First Communion Country Trends: Italy

Italian first communion
Figure 1.--These Italian boys are doing their First Communion in 1972. I'm not sure why they are not dressed alike as part of a larger school group. This is one of the few images we have noted with the girls dressed in black..

First Communion was a major event in the life of Italian children. Almost all Italians are Catholics. Most Itlaian boys thus have First Communions. Unfortunately, HBC has little information on First Communion in Italy. We also have have virtually no Italian images, let alone specific Italian first communion suits. We do note some rather stylish First Communion suits. Hopefully Italian visitors to this site will provide some insights. Italy is a country that HBC has had trouble obtaining information about.

Chronology

First Communion was a major event in the life of Italian children. Almost all Italians are Catholics. Most Itlaian boys thus have First Communions. Unfortunately, HBC has little information on First Communion in Italy. We have collected several images of Italian First Communions over time. We do not have sufficent images to assess First Communion outfits over time, but we are slowly collecting information so we can do this. We do note some rather stylish First Communion suits. Hopefully Italian visitors to this site will provide some insights. Italy is a country that HBC has had trouble obtaining information about.

Age

Many of the Italian First Communion images ae have found do not indicate the ages of the children. This of course can be roughly estimaed from the portraits. The children look to us to be aout 7-8 years of age.

School First Communion

Italy is a predominately Catholic country. The Catholic Chirch has played a major role in Italy's education system. There were religious lessons even in the public schools taught by priests. I'm not sure what the current policy toward religion is in Italian schools. First Comminion was a major event in an Italian child's life. Most Italian children did their First Communion as a part of a school group. The boys and girls dressed up in special outfits for the event. As far as I know, they never wore their school smocks. We note some private schools that had uniforms, had the bnoys wear their uniforms rather than new suits, sometimes with special collars. There may have been other changes such as white socks. The girls as far as we know always had special outfits, even at private schools with uniforms.

Individual Outfits

We do note some rather stylish First Communion suits. We note most Italian boys taking their First Communion as part od school groups wearing identical outfits. Some schools had uniforms. At most schools the children were incouraged to buy identical outfits to participate as a group in the First Communion ceremonies. We note some boys dressed differently in suits, apparently doing theirv First Communion as part of ssmall groups. I'm not sure ehu theu arevnot doing theor First Communion as part of larger school groups.
