Spanish First Communion Country Trends: Individuals

Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified Spanish boy doing his First Communion in 1921. He wears an all-whire outfir considting of a an open-neck white blouse and matching pants. It was worn with a white bow and sash as well as white gloves. This would have been a realtively expensive outfit as no jacket was involved. We do not know to what extent cost was a factor as opposed to fashion.

We have found several individual portraits of Spanish boys dressed up for their First Communion. They provide examples of the various outfits worn for First Communion and we can see how they changed over time. We notice quite a variety of different outfits. We see outfits that we have not noted in other countries.

Unidentified Boy (1921)

Here we see an unidentified Spanish boy doing his First Communion in 1921. He wears an all-whire outfir considting of a an open-neck white blouse and matching pants. It was worn with what looks kike a small white bow and sash as well as white gloves. This would have been a realtively expensive outfit as no jacket was involved. We do not know to what extent cost was a factor as opposed to fashion. There is no rossary, but the boy holds a missal which he received for the big event.

Unidentified Boy (1965)

This boy wears a particularly formal First Communion outfit. We have seen similar outfits for French First Communions. It might have been called an Eton suit, a small black jacket and lighter colored pants. The formal collar looks like a detachable collar. White it is not an Eton collar with points, it is similar, albeit rounded collar. Note the small white bowtie. The outfit includes an elaborate lace jabot. That is something we have not seen in other countries. There are also lacy cuffs and elaborate gloves.
