Ring Bearer and Page Costumes

Ring Bearer Costumes: Types

Figure 1.--This ring bearer in a wedding held about 1930 wears a fancy page boy with long white stockings. Note the tam cap and cape. The boy's costume looks to be an all white costume with satin knickers and long white stockings. He looks to be about 7 or 8 years old.

Boys ring bearer costumes cime in two basic types. The first are fancy costumes made specifically for the ring bearer in a wedding. These costumes are unlikely to be worn again for any other event. The second type of costume is a boy's suit. It may be purchased especially for a wedding, but the boy will be able to wear it for other events as well.

Fancy Wedding Costumes

The first are fancy costumes made specifically for the ring bearer in a wedding. Ring bearer costumes for these weddings are often quite fancy and can be very imaginative. They were often designed to look like a page boy's costume in a medevil or Renaissance court. Other were to made to look like 17th century Cavelier costumes. The costumes might be coordinated with the maid in waiting and flower girls instead of the best man and ushers. These costumes were unlikely to be worn again for any other event. These costumes are usually associated with formal, very expensive weddings. Thecpeople involved usually do not have to worry about the expenses involved and the fact that these are one use costumes.

Wedding Suits

The second type of costume is a boy's suit. It may be purchased especially for a wedding, but the boy will be able to wear it for other events as well. This is usually the choice for less expensive weddings. While the people involved are usually not poor, still using a suit that can be used again makes good sence. Ecen some of these suits may not be worn often. Dark suits can be worn for various occasions. A white suit, however, has more limited uses. The Eton short pants suit has become the standard style for a ring bearer. An older boy, however, may wear a standard suit with lapels.

Button-on Suits

A popular ring bearer costume for the younger boy are a variety of button-on suits. These outfits often have large collarsm sometimes with ruffles or lace. Some have smocking. Some are blouse and pants suits while others have tops and bottoms made of the same material. They are popular as the color can more easily be cooprdinted with the wedding theme color tan traditional blacl or white suits. These suits are mostly mase with short pants, but kneepants and knickers versions also are made.
