Illustrators: George Reiter Brill (United States, 1867-1918)

Figure 1.--This sensitive work by George Reiter Brill is quite unklike is often hard-edged newspaper drawings. I'm not sire when it was drawn, but probably about 1910. American boys through the early 20th century mostly slept in night shirts. Pajamas became nore common after World War I (1914-18).

George Reiter Brill was one of the best known American illustrators in the late 19th and early 20th century. His drawings were often featured in major northeastern newspapers, especially New York and Philadelphia newspapers. He was especially known for his poster art. Unlike many of the illustrators that we have chosen here, he was not particularly known for his drawings of children. His illustrations might deal with crime, wickidness, and politics as well as more mundane matters. He also had a softer side. We have noted, for example, some particularly beautiful drawings of early 20th century children. He also wrote the words for songs sich as "Bringing in the Hay".
