Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Carl V. Meyer (Denmark, 1879-1938)

Figure 1.--Meyers paonted this portrait in 1904. We do not know who the boy is. Presumably he is a Danish boy, but we are not postive about this. He is wearing what looks to be a Eton collar with a good sized white bow.

HBC has very limited information on Carl Vilhelm Meyer. We know that he was educated at the Academy of Fine Art under F. Vermehren. He represented the group of artists who pictured the common peoples life, a realistic school which is paid more and more attention to. Carl V. Meyer was also called the poor people's painter. He himself was a was the son of a shoemaker but because of his talent he managed to get scholarships for his education as an artist. He exhibited at the main exhibitions in Copenhagen (among them at Charlottenborg) and in Munich (Germany). In 1909 he received the reward Serdin Hansens Pr. for a painting at Charlottenborg. A Danish source reports the following: "Carl V. Meyer 1870-1938 uddannet på Kunstakad. Kbh. 1890-1897. dimitt. af F. Vermehren, Frants Henningsen og Otto Bache. virkeligheden lyrisk maler med en række vellykkede portrætter."

The image here was painted in 1904. While we have many photographic images friom this period, the aponted works are also helpful for a variety of reasons such as providing a feeling for the texture and background of society. They also of course provide color information not avilaable in black and white portraits.

The unidentified boy in this portrait is wearing what looks to be a Eton collar with a good sized white bow. He had red, naturally currly hair worn almost covering his ears. He looks to be about 6 or 7 years old.
