Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Pablo Picasso--Art

Figure 1.--Picasso painted numerous works set around the circus and circus preforners. These include his son Paul whilst dressed as a pierrot clown. We note many clown and other circus paintings in the Rose periods. This one was painted in 1922, well after the Rose Period. The different periods are not as well delineated as some would suggest.

Pablo Picasso is one of the towering figures of the 20th century. There is a small museum in Barcelona, the Museo de Picasso, that focuses on the artists early works. Picasso went through many stages and as a resulted painted in many diffeent styles. He is best known for cubism but many of his early works are stkingly realistic. The most noted periods are realism, caricature, the Blue Period (1901-04), and the Rose Period (1904- ). The Rose Period includes his paintings of circus people with harlequins, and clowns. Picasso in 1906 traveled to Holland. About this time the Steins begin to promote the work of Picasso and Matisse. Matisse had beun painting in a shoking new style, garish colors and wildly formed figures. Picasso's respose was to engender a life-long competition between the two. Other influences on Picasso at this time were stangely unrelated such as Rosseau, ancient Iberian sculptures, and Gauguin. Increasingly Picasso was moved to distilling images. One of his first works in this phase was a portrait of Gertrude Stein ho complained bit abouut the likeness. Cubism began to emerge with "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907), although he did show it for some time. Cubism is an effort to fragment three-dimensional forms onto the flat surface of a canvass. In essence by manipulating areas of pattern and color through overlapping and intertwining them, the Cubist allows the human form to be viewed from front and back simultaneously. Cubism dominate art for several decades of the 20th century.

Importance

Pablo Picasso is one of the towering figures of the 20th century. There is a small museum in Barcelona, the Museo de Picasso, that focuses on the artists early works. Drawing Skills

One gets the idea when viewing modern art that the the artists have no real drawing skills. This may or may not be the case, but it was certainly not the case with Picasso. He was a very skilled draugtsman. What is quite remarkable about Picasso is the great swings in his various periods, some show caseing his drawing skills and others where he abandons them. There are paintings with almost clasically sketched images and others with disfigured subjects and mangled body parts.

Periods

Art historians pont out that Picaso's long storied career is almost precisely coincidental with 20th century art. Some have argued that Picaso because of his powerful impact has largely driven 20th century art. A very young Pablo Picaso arrived in Paris at age 19 to begin his artistic career (1901). He was trained in the Spanish academic traditions. He had not yet created the art for which he was to become famous. Art experts studying Picaso have divided his work into several periods. The most noted are widely recognized. There is some disagreement about the less notable periods. Picasso's first period was his Blue Period (1901-04). He tended to use blue obviously during this period, but there is more to it than that. Some expert notice an obvious influence from El Greco and Toulouse-Lautrec, an interesting mix. Next came his Rose period (1905-08). Here it is not just aimple matter of using rose or red hues. His works were more iluminated and the essential spirit of the paintings were lighter as well. The Rose Period includes paintings of circus people with harlequins, and clowns. These first two periods included his most realistic imagery and this are of greatest interest to HBC. Then came a series of paintings with a clear Aftrican influence. Art historians have not, however, suggested an African period. Picasos's painting "Les Demoiselles d' Avignon" is commonly seen as a merger of the Blue and Rose periods (1907). Then came perhaps his most inovative and influential period--Analytical Cubism (1909-1912). Historiand than posit Synthetic Cubism (1912-1919). Art historians than suggest several pother periods, but there is wide disagreements both on he different periods and the time frame. And notably 20th century art itself went off on many different tangents.

Development

Picasso traveled to Holland (1905). [Komen] About this time the Steins begin to promote the work of Picasso and Matisse. Cubism

Cubism followed Picaso's Blue and Rose Periods, both which realitively realistic imagery. The first two periods were followed by Cubism--perhaps Picaso's most important contribution to art. Cubism is an effort to fragment three-dimensional forms onto the flat surface of a canvass. In essence by manipulating areas of pattern and color through overlapping and intertwining them, the Cubist allows the human form to be viewed from front and back simultaneously.
