Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: W. Easton Tayler (England, early 20th Century)

Figure 1.--This Tayler portrait was painted in 1928 and shows a curly haired English boy, at least we think the child is a boy, in a pink play suit. We unfortunately do not know who he is. The pink play suit shows the increasingly informal outfits that younger children were wearing. The pink color suggests that gender color conventions in 1928 were not yet fixed.

E. Easton Tayler was a London-based portrait painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy. W know very little about the artist. One portrait painted in 1928 shows a curly haired English boy, at least we think the child is a boy, in a pink play suit. We unfortunately do not know who he is, but he looks to be about 2 years old. Apparently Tayler believed in realistic painting as he painted the little nipper slobbers and all. His hair is has natural curls. While not cut short have not been allowed to grow long. The pink play suit shows the increasingly informal, practical outfits that younger children were wearing. This included children from wealthy families. Only an affluent family could afford to have a portrait made. The pink color suggests that gender color conventions in 1928 were not yet fixed.
