Artists: W.R. Waters (England, mid-19th century)

Figure 1.--W.R. Waters painted this portrait of an English child in 1851. We are not sure if the child is a boy or girl.

We know little about English artist W.R. Waters, except that he was active in the mid-19th century. We do notice a portrait he painted of an unidentified child in 1851. The child wears a burgandy dress with a lace collar and straw hat. We are unsure if the child is a boy or girl. The child holds a riding crop which suggests to us that it may be a boy. The child leans on a large St. bernard dog.
