Heinrich Himmler: Perplexing Question

Figure 1.--Here the adoring father is pictured with his daughter Gudrun at a sports festival in 1938. One of the most perplexing questions about the perpetrators of NAZI attrocities is the tenderness they often showed for their own families. Nothing shows this more then the very tender father-daughter relationship seen here.

Here SS Reichführer Heinrich Himmler, the adoring father, is pictured with his daughter Gudrun at a sports festival in 1938. One of the most perplexing questions about the perpetrators of NAZI attroicities is the tenderness they often showed for their own children. There are some fathers who are removed even mean to their children. This was not the case with Hummler. He clearly had a tender side. Yet he ocersaw awsar against the Jews that in particular targetted children. To me this shows how that issues like race, nationalism, religion, and socialist ideology can turn seeminly ordinary men into killers.

A British reader writes, "Many years ago I was talking to a father of a boy who was in my gym class at the YMCA. He recounted a story from his army days. He was escorting German prisoners of war. It was near Christmas and the prisoners started singing silent night with such emotion that it took him quite by surprise. Here were men singing gentle christmas music. They showed him that they were not hardened iron soldiers of granit but ordinary men. He asked an officer about the contrasting emotions. The soldier he spoke with said that he was a German and the other races in Europe were nothing but vermin. These might not be the actual words but the point was made. Himmler could be close to his daughter and family and the reat of Aryan Germans. Other races were vile creatures."
