Figure 1.-- This portrait of Stanley Clulow (writing indestinct) shows him on the balcony of his home. This is not a studio portrait, but one taken at home. The location is not indicated, but the background suggests England more thn America. The image is a little unclear, but Stanley looks to be wearing a kilt suit with a tam. Note the great dappled hobby horse.

Stanley Clulow (England, 1899)

This portrait of Stanley Clulow (writing indestinct) shows him on his hobby horse from the balcony of his home. This is not a studio portrait, but one taken at home. The location is not indicated, but the background suggests England more thn America. American streets tend to be straight while the impressive curved street background lookslike scenes we have seen in London and other English cities. Note the great dappled hobby horse. It looks rather like a scene out of "Peter Pan". The portrait is surely either an American or English scene because the date "Sept 1899" is written in English. The image is a little unclear, but Stanley looks to be wearing a kilt suit with a tam. It seems to be a sailor kiltsuit. Note that the boy wears white socks rather than long stockings which American boys almot always wore with their kilt suits. A reader tells us, "There was a Fredrick Stanley Clulow born in June 1896 in Leeds, Yorkshire. He doesn't appear in the 1901 Census, but the same name appears in the Immigration Passenger lists with an arrival in New York. I haven't access to the date of arrival, but it is possible that the photo was taken in Leeds and the family subsequently emmigrated to the United States. That might explain the photo being sold by an American dealer. The only other Stranley Clulow I can find in British records was born in 1908. It is an uncommon name in the Census and Birth Marriages and Deaths lists, so although the name recorded is Fredrick Stanley, he could well have been called Stanley, and there are several Fredrick Clulows in the lists, who might be the same family."
