Ordinary Individuals (The 1820s)

Figure 1.--We also note a portrai of an unidentified Austrian boy by Johann Nepomuk Ender in 1828 . He wears a long dark suit jacket with a large white collar. .

We are still dependent of paintings abd drawings in the 1820s. We have not found many images of boys from the 1820s yet. Our assessment is still limited without photographic images. One example is Thomas Sully, an American boy in 1820. He was the son of famed American artist Thomas Sully--"Torn hat". It shows that boys in the 1820s were wearing rustic straw hats, even boys in fashionable Philadelphia. A portrait by English artist E.V. Ripping shows an Englush family in 1829 with two boys. They are wearing a tunic suit and a skeleton suit. Notice that the one boy wears a straw hat loik the American boy in the Sully portrait. We also note a portrai of an unidentified Austrian boy by Johann Nepomuk Ender in 1828. He wears a long dark suit jacket with a large white collar.

Thomas Wilcocks Sully (United States, 1820)

One example is Thomas Sully, an American boy in 1820. He was the son of famed American artist Thomas Sully--"Torn hat". It shows that boys in the 1820s were wearing rustic straw hats, even boys in fashionable Philadelphia. It is Sully's 9-year old son, Thomas Wilcocks Sully. Sully painted it in 1820. It was painted at a turning point in his career and is in in sharp contrast to the refiened portraits of luminaries like President Jackson, Lafayette, and Queen Victoria for which he is best known. It was a genre work. The hat in particular leads to some speculation. The beaten up hat is in sharp contrast to the rather angelically painted boy. Straw hats at the time were commonly made locally and contrast with the more refined hats that three decades later after the 49ers headed for California moved through Panama were imported from South America (through Panama).

Unidentified Boy (Austria, 1828)

We also note a portrai of an unidentified Austrian boy by Johann Nepomuk Ender in 1828 (figure 1). He wears a long dark blue suit jacket with a red tie, and large white collar. It looks rther like an Etoncollar, but is is a soft fabric collar which seems to be attached to the shirt. It is not clear, but the jacket seems to have horizonal features like frogging. His pants are white, contrasting with the collar.

Bean Boys (England, 1829)

A portrait by English artist E.V. Ripping shows an English family in 1829 with two boys. The family is that of Reginald Henry Bean with his wife Emma (daughter of J.R. Lucas of the Nailsea Glassworks) Their boys are wearing a tunic suit and a skeleton suit. Notice that the one boy wears a straw hat loik the American boy in the Sully portrait.
