Figure 1.--Here Harold and Phyllis in this undated photograph are wearing rather elaborate Japanese costumes. Image courtesy of the MD collection. |
There are several photographs of the children dressing up in costumes. Some look to be at parties. Other images show the children just dressing up at home by themselves. Some of the costumes are quite elaborate. One particularly elaborate costume were Japanese copstumes. They look like they are wearing real kimonos. Here we are not sure just why the children were in Japanese costume. Surely this was theor mother's idea. Japnaese coustume is not something like pirate or cowboy costumes that the children would have come up with on their own. It appears to have been just for a photograph. The children would have been unlikely to even know how to play in Japanese costumes. There is no indication that Harold new anything about samuris. There is ceratinly no sword involved with his costume. We wonder where mother got such accurate minature Japanese costumes in the first place. Of course Japan may well have been in the news since the Japanese victory over the Russians in 1905.

The parents also seem to have been fond of dressing up, perhaps they were involved in amateur theatre. Or they may have entertained with costume parties.
Of course, the early 20th century were the days before radio and television and children and adults people had to make their own entertainment. It was quite common for children at this time to put on little skits or tableau vivants for parents and guests.
