Figure 1.--Harold, Phillis, and Elizebeth here play on the porch of their country home Mallowfield. Harold wears a colored play sailor suit, not the white one we normally see him wearing. Note Harold's bangs and long hair at the side. Phyllis's hair is rather short and worn with a hairbow. Perhaps it is just combed back as later photographs shopw her with long ringlets. Note her doll. This photograph was taken in July 1905. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

The Fitzroy-Carrington Family Chronology (1904-15)

Harold and Phyllis Fitzroy-Carrington were extensively photographed outside what is probably their home in New York in the early 20th century before World War I (at least brefore America entered the War), about 1904-15. Harold and Phyllis were photographed in June 1904 (figure 1). This is the earliest photograph. Subsequent photographs show the children growing up and new members being added to the famuly. Harold's clothes also change over time as mother begins to choose more mature looking knicker suits. As many of the photographs are dated, we have a good idea as to when the children were wrearing the various garments shown in the pghotographs.

1904

Harold and Phyllis Wearing a Sailor Tunic and Pinafore (June 1904)

Harold and Phyllis were photographed in June 1904. The image is archived on the main Fitzroy-Carrington page. This is the earliest photograph. Harold for some reason his rather serious about the photograph. Harold wears an emaculate white sailor tunic with white knickers. Only his long stockings are a dark color. Notice the chin strap on his sailor cap. Notice the crossing belt, a very common feature of these tunic suits. Phyllis wears what looks like a pinafore and white dress with a wide-brimmed sun hat. Unlike her brother, Phyllis wears white long stockings. Both children wear rather modern looking oxford shoes. The pose suggests the two had a very close reatinship. The two look to be on ome kind of summer outing.

Harold looking after Phyllis (June 1904)

Another June 1904 photograph shows Harold looking after his baby sister Phyllis. It is another photograph of him in a sailor tunic suit rather than a more grown up sailor suit with a midy blouse. The knicker pants look rather long for a sailor tunic suit.

1905

Harold and the girls at Mallowfield (July 1905)

Harold, Phillis, and Elizebeth here play on the porch of their country home Mallowfield (figure 1). Harold wears a play sailor suit. I'm not sure what color it was. Note is bangs and long hair at the side. Phyllis's hair is rather short and worn with a hairbow. Perhaps it is just combed back as later photographs shopw her with long ringlets. Note her doll. This photograph was taken in July 1905.

Harold and Phyllis with Aunt Dolly (July 1905)

Phillis and Harold are pictured with mother in this July 1905 photograph. Phyllis weards a white dress. Harold wears an above the knees white knickers sailor suit. It looks to be newc as the sleeves are quite long. Both children wear identical strap shoes with white socks that have a dark band at the top.

Harold Wearing a sailor cap and coat (December 1905)

Harold was photographed by himself in a coat around Christmas during December 1905. In this picture he is rather amused about the photograph. Winter in New York can be quite cold. Her Garold wrars a warm double bereasted coat with a dark sailor cap. His mother clearlu like headwear. Here he also wears his strking sailior cap with a chin strap. Because of the coat you can not see what else Harold is wearing, but probably a knicker outfit, possibly another tunic suit. All you can see are his dark long stockings, but here he is wearing hightop shoes. He also wears very tight fitting leather gloves.

1906

Harold and Phyllis wearing sailor hats and coats (April 1906)

This photograph of Harold and Phyllis was taken a couple years after the forst photograph seen here. Both wear wide-brimmed sailor hats, but they are styled differently. Harold;s hat has a black trim around te brim. Phyllis' hat has some huge arrangement on top. Harold seems to be wearing some kind of tirtle-neck sweater. Both have double breasted coats, but Phyllis has one styled decidely girishly and with very large bittons.Harold wears white knickers and Phyllis a white dress. Both wear black stockings. Harold has a bell looking rather like a small school bell, but they do not have books. This looks to have been taken near at 'Mallowfield' in Mamaroneck. N.Y.

Harold with boquet (July 1906)

Here Harold wears the white knickers sailor suit that he is often pictured wearing. He has just picked a boquet of flowers, presumably for mother.

Harold and Elizabeth at Mallowfield (August 1906)

This is one of many summer photographs at Mallowfield showing the children playing. Here Harold is playing with his little sister Elizabeth. They are both fascinated by a rather tame duck. Harold wears a knickers sailor suit. As it is August, he wears socks rather than long stockings. Both have sun hats. Notice their coutry home at Mallowfield in the background. The photograph was taken in 1906.

Harold and Phyllis on Mallowfield gate (December 1906)

This photograph was taken furing the winter of 1906. I wonder if father did not bring the children out to Mallowfield to select a Christmas tree. Both Harold and Phyllis are having fun with their father who has placed them on the gate to the estate with a no trespassing dsign. Both wear double breasted coats with stylish sailor hats.

1907

Swimming togs (July 1907)

Here Harold, Phyllis, and Elizabeth are in their bathing costumes for a swim in the pond. Elizabeth is wearing a sweater or sweatshirt over her costume, but it appears to matvch the one her big sister is wearing. The photograph was taken in July 1907.

Phyllis' birthday party (July 1907)

This looks to be Phyllis' birtday party in July 1907. All the boys including Harold wear white sailor suits. The girls wear white dresses, ringlet curls, and big white hair bows to match their dresses. The party was at Mallowfield.

Harold learning the violin (October 1907)

Both mother and father were musical. Harold by October 1907 has his own small violin and an instructor was showing how to play. I am not sure when he actually began. Harold still has bangs and wears a colored sailor suit, with long stockings and patent leather strap shoes.

Harold and Phyllis skating (about 1907)

Harold and Phyllis were photographed in front of their New York City home in this undated image taken about 1907. Harold looks to be about 10 years old. he two look to be about to go rollar skating. Harold had the hockey stick. It probably would not have been seen appropriate for Phyllis to play hockey. As always the children have elegant head wrear. Harold wears a peaked cap, but the crown is much fuller than an English school boy cap. His double breasted coat covers his clothes, but he is wearing above the knee knickers with long stockings and hightop shoes. Phyllis has a large wide brimmed hat--but it is a fur hat. Her coat covers a plaid dress. It must havebeen cold. Harold had leather gloves and Phillis has knit gloves.

1908

Phyllis playing (about 1908)

This family clearly liked to have a good time. Here Phyllis was playing in the yard of their hime. She is presumably wearing a dress, but all you can see is the Peter Pan collar. Her hair is sone in bangs. She looks to be about 9 years old which woulf nean that this photohraph would have been taken about 1908. She has found an large poster advertisment for Old Dutch Clanser which she has fashioned into a can. It look like her father surprised her with the camera. This looks to have been taken at 'Mallowfield' in Mamaroneck. N.Y.
