Griffin Children (United States, 1936)

Griffin children
Figure 1.-- The Griffin children lived near Greensboro, Alabama. The photo of the four, a boy and three girls, was taken in June 1936. We do not know their first names. They had an African ancestor (three or four generations removed). Although they considered themselves white, they fell under Alabama's race laws. Generally in the South, people who were 1/16th black were classified as blacks. And before the Civil War could have been enslaved. Thus the children would have had to attend segregated black schools. This probably discouraged school attendancde. A lot of families or individuals in similar coircumstances moved north. We do not know much about the family, but they may be sharecroper children. We have been unable to find any further information bout the family. Source: Library of Congress. LC-USF34-006628-D).
