Ada and Clayton Reitz (United States, about 1890)

This cabinet card portrait ws taken by Hayes in Sterling, Illinois. The chidren look to be about 3 and 5 years old. Their names are Ada and Clayton Reitz. They both wear skirted, but not identical outfits. Ada wears a dress with a locket, but we can't make out much detail. Clayton looks to be wearing a blouse and skirt rather than a dress, but we are not positive. The blouse seems to have sailor styling, but without the popular strip detailing. He also looks to have a polka-dot bow. The boy's skirt probably would have been called a kilt at the time. It is pleated, but does not appear to have ay other kilt features. Ada has a center part while Clayton has a side part. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken about 1890. There is information on a Reitz family in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. Here are the data: In 1900 Clayton Reitz lived in the town of Jordan, Whiteside county, Illinois. He was born in Septembfer 1892 in Illinois. Ada was born in September 1889 in Illinois. Their dad's name was John L. Reitz and their mom's name was Lizzie (probably Elizabeth). At the time of the census the following family members existed and were the indicated ages, John L. Reitz (43), Lizzie Reitz (42), Arthur Reitz (17), May Reitz (15), Walter Reitz (13), Ada Reitz (10), Clayton Reitz (7), and Charles Reitz (5). The dad was a farmer. The census was taken on June 26, 1900. The only thing is that in the photograph here Ada looks a couple years younger than Clayton. So there may have been two different Reitz families with Adas and Claytons. We just don't know.
