Canadian Immigrant Jewish Family (early 1910s)

Figure 1.-- Unfortunately no date on this photo, but it is reported to be a Jewish immigrant family taken in Canada in the early 1900s. We would guess the early 1910s. The family had four boys. The older boys wear identical Norfolk knicker suits with long black stockings. The younger boys wore white outfits, one with knickers and the other with kneepants.

Unfortunately no date on this photo, but it is reported to be a Jewish immigrant family taken in Canada in the early 1900s. We would guess the early 1910s but the late 1900s is also possible. Our dating is based primrily on the clothing styles. World War I cut off immigration, especially Jewish immigration. (Most Jews immigrated from Russia and Russian controlled Poland. When war broke out with Germany, the Jews had no way of reaching Canada and America.) But ofcourse the family could have immigrated earlier and had the portrait taken in the 1910s which is probably what occurred here. The family had four boys. The older boys wear identical Norfolk knicker suits with long black stockings. The younger boys wore white outfits, one with knickers and the other with kneepants. Both boys wears white socks/stickings with sandals. One appears to be single bar, the other two bar. A HBC reader writes, "One wonderrs if this is an example of immigrants bringing this style into North America." HBC would guess that the family has been in Canada for some time. The older boys seem to be wearing more Canadian-style suits than European styles. We are less sure about the younger boys. Areader writes, "I would not have known that the clothing appears to have been bought in Canada rather than Europe. Also, the sandals look too new to have come through a long trip from eastern Europe or Russia."
