Alan and Graham: Summer Holliday (1935)

Figure 1.--Unlike today we didn't often change into play clothes when returning from school. We tended to wear our school clothes or some of them even in holiday. Here the three of us sit with my maternal grandmother on the step of our beach hut. Americans would probably call it a cabin. It meant that we were right their on the beach all summer. We are more casual, but I am wearing my school socks. Note my brother holding a folded bellows camera.

Unlike today we didn't often change into play clothes when returning from school. We tended to wear our school clothes or some of them even in holiday. Here the three of us sit with my maternal grandmother on the step of our beach hut. Note that Gran is wearing a coat. While it was July or August there were days when it was chilly and the beach faced the North Sea. England doesn't have blistering summer days like America. Americans would probably call our hut a beach cabin. It meant that we were right their on the beach all summer. We are more casual, but I am wearing my school socks. I am not sure just why as I usually went vabout without socks like my brother. Perhaps because it was aittle chilly. Note my brother holding a folded bellows camera. Our little sister took a bit of rough handling from us. I think at that age I rather looked on her as a toy to play with. I have a rubber quoit on my lap. I am not sure if Americans are familiar with it. It is a rubber ring beach toy which children and adults throw and catch. It doesn't run away like a ball, so it is more friendly to other beach users who don't appreciate being hit by a stray ball.
