Cumbrian children like other children enjoyed the lakes and boating. The children seen here wear school caps and knickers. One boy even has a formal Eton collar. They do no seem to have changed their clothes much for boating and there were no life preservers to be seen in a photogragh taken at Newby Bridge in 1914. A British reader tells us, "You will not even to this day find many children or adults who are messing about on the water, or enjoying a river trip wearing a life preserve. The only time you would have a preserve is if you were canoeing or taking part in an adventure water activity. Just sailing on the river and we don't wear them."
