Austrian Family Trends: Budapest Brothers--Garments

Figure 1.--Pisti who was 7 years old and Viki who was 3 years old can be seen in this 1898 portrit. Not that the boys wear different suits, but the same wide-brimmed sailor hats, Eton collars, and floppy bows. Notice thereare no creases in the pants. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

The boys in this family appears to have worn dresses as little boys. Wide-brimmed sailor hats were popular with as younger boys, probably with dresses and without sailor suits. After breeching they appear to have worn various kneepants outfits. The kneepants have the dstictive three button trim at the knee hem. The boys wore Eton collars and floppy bows with their suits. We notice Norfolk suits, sailor suits, as well as plainer suits without destinctive styling. They also wore several different types of sailor suits which appear to have been especially popular with the boys' mother. All or most of the boys appear to have attended military school and thus wore cadet uniforms. As there were four boys born over about a 10 year period from about 1891-1901?, the family photographs provide a wonderful overview of the various garments worn by Austrian boys in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Chronology

As there were four boys born over about a 10 year period from about 1891-1901?, the family photogtraphs provide a wonderful overview of the various garments worn by Austrian boys in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Specific Garments

An examination of the available portraits provide quite a bit of information about the clothes that the boys wore over the two decades over which the available portraits were taken.

Headwear

Wide-brimmed sailor hats were popular with as younger boys, probably with dresses and without sailor suits. I am not sure what other headwear the boys wore, but we note that as younger boys, they commonly wore sailor head gear. The only headgear tht the younger boys are shown in are sailor hats and caps. Several portraits show the boys wearing wide-brimmed sailor hats. There were two styles of sailor hats with different brim withs and crown forms. We also note flat top sailor caps with a cap band. The two boys that entered military schools had cadet caps.

Dresses

The boys in this family appears to have worn dresses as little boys. We are not sure precisely when the boys were breached. One portrait of Viki shows him wearing a kneepants suit at about age 3. A portrait of Villy at about the same age in 1902 show him wearing a white dress without a collar, but with a pastel-colored sash. We assume that in a family that the same general approach was followed when breaching the boys. So it must have been when they were bout 3 years of age, but we are not sure just when. This is one of the only two portrait we have of one of the boys still wering dresses.

Pants

The boys wear several different kinds of pants. After breeching the boys appear to have worn various kinds of pants. The younger boys wear kneepants and knickers. I am not sure if there were age destinctions her or just different styles. Both kneepants and knickers appear to have been fashionble in Hungary at the turn-of-the century. The kneepants have the distictive three button trim at the knee hem, but one image shows the buttons extending well up the leg. We also notice the boys wearing bloomer knickers. We are not positive that there re a conventions here as we notice boys wearing kicker bloomers at age 7. We notice boys both younger and older wearing kneepants. I do not notice them wearing short pants. The older boys wear long pants beginning around 13 or 14 yers of age. This could be related to when they entered military school which some or all of the boys attended. Creases do not appear on the boys' pants until after the turn of the 20th century. We only have formal portraits of the boys. We are not sure of what kinds of pants they wore for play or in more casual circumstances.

Collars

The boys wore what look to be Eton collars and floppy bows with their suits. The floppy bows, however, cover much of the collars. We also notice th nbows wearing Peter Pan collars with small bows. HBC is not sure how common Eton collars were worn on the continent. Available portraits of the brothers show that they were worn in Hungary at the turn-of-the 20th century.

Bows

We notice the younger boys wearing floppy bows. In one 1898 image the boys wear polka-dot floppy bows with Eton collars. Other portraits show th boys wearing Peter Pan collars with floppy bows. None of the boyws that th nboys wear are epecially large. Most are solid colors. The polka-dot bows worn with Eton collars s to be the largest.

Sailor suits

The boys wore qute a few different types of sailor suits which appear to have been especially popular with the boys' mother. We also notice the boys wearing a variety of other garments with various elements of sailor styling, such as sailor hats. We notice the boys wearing both white and blue sailor suits. I'm not sure to what age the boys wore sailor suits. One portrait shows one of the boys wearing a sailor hat and suit at age 10. I'm not sure how much longer they wore sailor suits. One suit was all white without any stripes or detailing. Another suit was blue with traditional stripe styling.

Suits

We notice Norfolk suits, sailor suits, as well as plainer suits without destinctive styling.

Military school uniform

Two of the boys appear to have attended military school and thus wore cadet uniforms. We know the two youngest boys attended military school, Pisti and Viki. We are not sure about the two younger boys. Pisti is shown in 1903 at age 12 wearing the cadet uniform of a military school. I am not sure when he actually enrolled, but 11-12 years is the the likely time. The uniform included a destinctive cap that was worn before World War I. Both Pisti and Viki were old enough to have served in World War I. We do not know, however, what happened to them in the War or, even if they survived.

Hosiery

The boys usually wore long dark sockings. We notice Pisti at age 7 years wearing over-the-knee bloomer knickers with short black socks. Usually the boys, however, a different ages wearing long black stockings.
