Figure 1.--This Dutch tourist postcard shows children wearing dustinctive headwear. Th girl wears one of many differnt styles for women and girls. The boy wears a peaked military cap, not exactly a tradtional style, but worn in the 19th century. There was not a ;ot of diverse styles for boys. Volndm was a fiding port which becme a populr tourist ite in the 20yh cnury because traditionl clohing persisted for a while.

Dutch boys have worn many cap and hat styles similar to those worn by other European boys. EWe do noy byet have muchn information on headwar. Sailor hats were especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th century as many Dutch boys wore sailor suits. Younger boys in the 18th century might wear 'fall caps'. Rhere were however, not exclusively DutchIn the late-19th and early-20th century Dutch boys also commonly wore military looking caps with a hard viser or bill. These caps were called 'kleppet'. It was a characteristically Dutch style. We are not sure of the origins of those caps. Wev also msee many Dutch children, both boys and girls wrearing stocking caps.

Chronology

We do not yet have enough information about Dutch boys headwear to create a chronology.

Types

Dutch boys have worn many cap and hat styles. We have not yet found a lot of examples of the various styles. For the most part thery seem siliar tp headwear ro otyher European countries. There are a lot of destinctive styles for girls, meaning scaled-down traditional women's hair styles. YThis is not the casev for boys. What we see is mostly styles widely worn in Europe.

Fall caps

Younger todlers do a lot of falling down. So we se fall caps, often called pudding caps. Our earliest examples comes from Flandrs, in a Rubens paintung )16th century. Dutch children in the 19th century might wear fall caps. These were sort of early crash helments for children learning to walk. W are notb sure how common they were. The one picture here was made about 1825. These were not exclusively Dutxch. I'm also not sure how the decoration on the caps may have varied among countries. The Duch example we have found is straw rather than the heavily padded examps we have been found. We think the see more heavily cushioned or paddeding arangerment wre more common. They seem most common in the 18th century.

Kleppet

In the late 19th and early 20th century Dutch boys also commonly wore military looking caps with a hard viser or bill. These caps were called "kleppet". It was a characteristically Dutch style. I'm not sure, however, of the origins of those caps.

Peacked caps

We see some Dutch boys wearing peaked caps, similar to Britisj school caps, but not in bright colors. They were not nearly as common in the Netherlands as in Britain. They do seem more common than in other European countries.

Sailor caps and hats

Sailor hats were especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th century as many Dutch boys wore sailor suits. Sailor suits and caps and hats were worn throughout Europe. There were some distincive styles such as the Frebnch caps with a red pom on top, reflecting national naval uniforms. I do not know if there were any destibtive Dutch sailor headwear.

Stocking Cap

We note Dutch children, both boys and girls, wearing stocking caps during the winter. Many were brightly colored. They varied greatly in length. Some were basic watch caps. Others were long, rather like elf caps. We note some children with poms on their stocking caps. These were not destinctly Dutch caps. We see these caps in many northern Europeam countries. They seem especially associated with skating.
