Indian Traditional Garments: Waist Laces


Figure 1.--This is an example of waist-lace worn in public in an Indian fishermen village. We thought the photograph was probably taken in the 1960s because of the black ans white photograohy, but a reader tells us that it was taken in the 2000s.

Very young boys may wear waist laces. This is the case even with Westernized middle-class families. The age varies a bit both chronologically and demographically. These laces are used also in upper classes. It seems to me that the waist-laces are not a lack of clothing. They are purposely worn as the only garment. We don't understand the puropse of waist laces. Hopefully, Indian readers can explain this to us. We note children in urban areas wearing them mostly at home. They are vmuch more common in rural areas. We even note some younger children wearing them along with Western clothing. We have noted laces of different colors, but they seem generally unornamented.
