Romania: Unknown Images

Figure 1.--This cabinet card prtrait is undated but was probably taken about 1890. The children are probably siblings. They look to be about 6-11 years of age. They seem to be wearing some kind of costumes, but we have no idea what kind of costumes they are. Possibly they are circus or some other type of performers, but costumes seem more likely. They may have some type of dance or acrobatic routein.

Photography is a wonderful tool in understanding people around the world. It helps to illustrate a wide range of cultural, economic, political, and social developments which HBC is attempting to study. In the process of amassing an archive of images for this project, we come across some images that we do not understand or fully understand. This is especially true for countries like Romania for which we have opnly limited information and no personal experiences. Here we will load images from Romania that we do not understand or we believe requires some elaboration. Hopefully our Romanian readers will help us understand these images.

Figure 1

This cabinet card prtrait is undated but was probably taken about 1890 (figure 1). The children are probably siblings. They look to be about 6-11 years of age. They seem to be wearing some kind of costumes, but we have no idea what kind of costumes they are. Possibly they are circus or some other type of performers, but costumes seem more likely. They may have some type of dance or acrobatic routein. The boys' pants are dome like pantalettes and they wear white long stockings and strap shoe. The girl wears a dress with a low neckline looking rather like a performance costume. She also wears white stockings. As was common in Eastern Europe, the mount says 'Cabinet Portrait' in English. It is interesting that the wording is in English rather than German. We are not sure why that was, but suggests that photography was seen as a modern foreign import. The studio was taken at the Jean Bielig studio. We think it was located in Bottusany. That also appears to be a fmily name.
