Swedish Boys'Outdoor Play: Bicycles

Figure 1.-- Here we see two Sweedish brothers in 1937. The seem to share a single bike. The boy on the bike wears a flat cap and a short pants sailor suit with long stockings. I'm not sure what color long stockings he is wearing. With a sailor suit you might guess dark blue or black. A reader thinks brown is more likely. So the clothing details show, we have lightened the image, so the boy's sailor suit and stockings may show lighter than they were. Its hard to see his sailor suit because he is wearing a sweater, aparently the weather is a little cool. Its a bit hard to make out what his older brother is wearing, but it looks like long, very full-cut knickers.

We note some Swedish children, mostly boys, enjoying bicycles. Until after World War II, the bike, however, was still mostly limited to children from affluent families. Here we see two boys in 1937 (figure 1). It looks to us that the boys share one bike as it is seems rather large for the younger boy, although he seems to be managing it quite nicely. The bkike was more coomonly a vehicle for working class Sweedes to go to work. After World War II this began to change and the bike became accessible to many more children.
