Swedish Boys' Clothes: Individuals

Figure 1.--

We have found some interesting portraits of individual Swedish boys. Hopefully Swedish readers will also contribute their own experiences. Carl Gustof Fodd (Sweden, 1892?-): We notice a portrait of a boy about 10 years old taken on November 27, 1902. We know little about him. We believe that the portrait is from Sweden. On the bottom it reads H Cederin (presumably the photographer) Katrineholm (the location in Sweden). The family may have emigrated to American or the portrait was sent to family members who did emigrate. Carl wears a very plain, but heavy dark wool sailor suit. There is very hard to see dark detailing on the sailor collar. There is a dickey, but the boy's undershirt seems to show above the dickey. The lapel of the "V" collar front has a non-traditional shape. We know very little about the boy, but so often images are not dated, it is useful having a precisely dated image. He has a short hair cut. We see Arne Sohlstrom in his school clothes with his cousin in 1928. We have some pages on a Scandinavian boy who we think is Norwegian, but he might be Swedish.

Morbios Petor (1870s)

The boy in this CDV portrait is Morbios (as best I can make out) Petor. He was from Helsingborg. He wears a striped tunic suit with a very small tunic jacket. The portrait is undated, but note the stand behind the boy. This means it was a fairly early portrait. We would guess that it was taken some time in the 1870s.

Arne Sohlstrom (1928)

Swedish teenagers, Arne Sohlstrom (aged 14) and his older cousin Julia Moback. had their picture taken in Sweden during 1928. Arne is wearing his school clothes--dark short trousers, long black stockings, low-cut leather shoes, a white shirt with soft collar buttoned up to the neck, and his school cap with a leather bill. This was typical schoolboy dress in Sweden for boys in secondary school during the 1920s. The pair is sitting in the garden outside their house, apparently. Notice that the trees are in full leaf, which probably indicates late spring or early fall. The long stockings were not worn so much for warmth but as part of "proper" dress for schoolboys. It seems to be a bit chilly, however, because Julia, Arne's cousin, is wearing a lightweight overcoat.

Lars Björling (about 1947)

Lars Björling was born in 1939. He was the youngest son of his famous tenor father Jussi Björling. Here we see Lars greeting his father upon his returning home from an overseas concert tour to America. Lars wears a short pnts suit and what looks like a student caps. He was coming back from Hollywood. The photograph is undated but we think may have been taken in 1947, perhaps 1948-49. The family had a strong connection with the United States.

Scandinavian Boy (1952-53)

A HBC reader has sent us a set of photographs of a boy in Norway, Sweden, and on vacation in other European countries. We are not sure though if he is Norwegian or Swedish. Many of the available photographs were taken in Norway. The images do, however, provide some glimpses of a Scandinavian boy and his family in the early 1950s. The photographs were talen in 1952 and 53. The family is camping in Norways and Itly. This travel suggests that the family was comfortably fixed. There is a bicycle race in Sweden. The boy wears a military-stle cap and a beret. The pictures look to be taken during the summer and the boy wears short pants with ankle sicks and knee socks. We're not sure how he dressed during the winter. Perhaps our Scandinavian readers will have some insights to offer here.
