Photo Pages: Animals

Figure 1.--

Many schools, especilly private schools, have a school pet. Many elementary schols keep animals of all descriptions in their classrooms. Larger animals have an honored place at many rural schools on "Calf Day." Innodern New Zealand, schools have often expanded Calf Day so that non-farm children can bring their small pets to school.

The Cat

She pounces
batters the frail wings with her claws
Shreds the orange, the black and the green
The butterfly struggles to rise
tattered wings
unbalanced and helplessly caught
by one leg
She catches it in her mouth
liesurely
she rolls on her back in the warm sun
The butterfly jerks
flutters, twists and drops to the ground
She loses interest
the butterfly lies dejected
lifeless
a brittle leaf to blow in the breeze
