Figure 1.--Most New Zealand students bring their lunch or buy snacks at school and then sit around outside to chat about the topic of the day.

School Canteen

Our canteen has received a fifth ' Healthy Heartbeat 'award. This places us in an elite group of New Zealand schools. We try to ensure that our food items sold are low in sugar, salt and/or fat. This is a feature of our school canteen and the service we provide to students and families. However each year we do get student comment about the canteen and the range of food items sold. Recently I received written comment from a Y8 boy and whilst I have not acceded to his requests I admire his writing his point of view and have reproduced it for this newsletter, Gary Sweeney, Principal.

To the teacher: I am not buying vile food from the canteen. It's a waste of money. It sux. All the canteen has is healthy food so that it can win a Heart beat Award, so you can be 'top dogs'. Get decent food ! Kids like to have fish and chips on a Friday. Get lollipops and coca cola. Then kids wouldn't want to go to the shop outside school. People don't like healthy food. Do a survey between coke, lollipops and canteen food. Sadly yours, Scott Kennedy.

Greymouth Junior Highschool

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is open all year at intervals and lunchtime and sells a wide range of both hot and cold food. Form teachers are usually given lists of the main foods and food items which must be ordered at interval.

Although you are expected to eat lunch outside, on wet days certain classrooms may be used. Your form teacher can tell you which ones. Many of the school's activities take place at lunchtime and you may also borrow sports equipment from the P.E. Department. To leave the school grounds you will need to give a note to your senior house teacher who will issue you with a "lunch pass".
