Photo Pages: Morning Assembly

Figure 1.--The morning assessbly is an established tradition at New Zealand schools. The boys are enjoying some witty remarks by the headmaster.

The Bill

Monday afternoon assemblies are often an opportunity to enjoy a significant story told by the Principal. The following is an example of just such a story: No Charge Now a little boy walked up to his Mum in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and he handed her a piece of paper he had been writing on. And after wiping her hands on her apron she read it, and this is what it said:
1. For mowing the lawn .... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... $5.00
2. For making my own bed this week ... ... ... ... ... ... ... $1.00
3. For going to the store ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... $0.50
4. For playing with little brother while .... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... ... ... you went shopping .. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .$0.25
5. For taking out the trash .. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . $1.00
6. For getting a good report card ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . $5.00
7. For helping with the dishes sometimes .. ... ... ... ... ... $0.75
8. And for helping clean the back yard .... ... ... ... ... ... . $1.25

Well, his Mum looked at him standing there expectantly, and I could see the memories flashing through her mind. So she picked up the pen, and turning over the paper, this is what she wrote:
For the nine months I carried you, rolling inside me - no charge.
For the nights I stayed up with you, doctored you, and prayed for you - no charge.
For the lost time and the tears that you cause through the years there is no charge.
And when you add it all up, the full cost of my love is no charge.
For the nights filled with dread and all the worries ahead - no charge.
For the advice and the knowledge and even the cost of your college - no charge.
For the toys , food and the clothes and even for wiping your nose, there is no charge, Son.
And when you add it all up, the full cost of my love is - NO charge.

Well, when his Mum had finished reading it to him, he had great big tears in his eyes. And he looked up at her and said, "Mum, I sure do love you." And taking back the paper, he turned to where he had written and taking up the pen once again; What do you think he wrote? - NO CHARGE.

Announcements

Most of the announcements at a morning assesmbly are mundane dealing with normal school activities. Some can be a bit unusdual.

Greymouth Airport

A complaint about children on the airport runway, has been passed on to all Greymouth schools. Recently, a pilot had to pull out of a landing as children were on the runway. Schools have been advised to keep away as the aerodrome is a prohibited place to the public and I know parents will pass this information on to their children as well.

Body Piercing

I have had a request form a student that he be allowed to wear a stud in his nose while at school. The Board of Trustees will discuss this at their next meeting. The existing school policy on jewellery covers earrings, necklaces and rings. A maximum of 2 studs per ear is allowed, necklaces or taonga must be worn under school clothing and rings are not allowed. I’d be interested in parent comment about body piercing and the appropriateness of school rules regarding this.
