Many New Zealand schools have gone to great length to accomodate students with special needs. These children are mainstreamed as much as possible, but many schools have a variety of special facilities to meet their needs. Authorities believe that both the handicapped and the other pupils will benefit from the resulting interaction. Some schools sponser sensitivity training to help their pupils understand the difficulties that handicapped children must overcome. Dealing with these needs can be costly. Some especially handicapped children may have an adult aide assigned to them full time during the day. It is a major commitment that New Zealand schools are making to the needs of these children.


Disabled Students

This College welcomes all students. All areas have access by ramp and special toilet facikities areclocated in T Block and R Block. Parents of \disabled students are welcome in the Student Learning Support Unit at any time.

Figure 2.--New Zealand schools are making a major effort to mainstream handicapped children, even those with severe physical disabilities. As a result socialminteractions take place between the handicapped and non-handicapped students that would never have occurred if the handicapped were kept in specialized schools.
