Canadian Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: The 1930s

Figure 1.-- This is from a Canadian French language catalog issued by Eaton's for fall and winter, 1939-40. The blue cheviot suits for boys displayed here are for boys from 6 to 10 years old. The suit is available in two styles--with both short (rather longish) trousers and knickers. The suits are double-breasted and have a belted back.

We have very limited information from Canadian catalogs during the 1930s. Eatons offered a range of suits for boys in its 1936-37 catlog which included short pants suits for boys up to age 12 years. They were shown being worn with long stockings. We note an Eaton's ad in the Spring-Summer 1939 catalog which offered various suits with short pants, knickers, and long pants. Eatons refers to long trousers), "Bloomer" pants (knickers), and "knee pants" (short trousers) in Canada, even as late as 1940). We notice that Eaton's in its 1939-40 Fall-Winter French edition catalog offer garter waists in sizes 2-14? years. The model was a girl. I'm not sure to what extent boys at the time wore them. We also notice hosiery being offered in theEaton's Fall and Winter 1939-40 catalog. Long stockings were particularly important among the offerings.

Eatons offered short pants suits for boys in its 1934-34 Fall and Winter catalog. These are for Canadian boys from 4 to 10 years old. Notice that the suits are double breasted, worn with adult-looking collared shirts with neckties and ribbed long stockings. Older Canadian boys usually wore knickers, breeches, or, after about age 15 or 16, long trousers in the mid-1930s.

Eatons offered a range of suits for boys in its 1936-37 catlog which included short pants suits for boys up to age 12 years. They were shown being worn with long stockings. Simpsons had a hosiery page in its 1936-37 Fall-Witer catalog. It is interesting because it offered all three major types of chilften's hosiery, long stockings, knee socks, and ankle socks. It shows the transirtion from long stockings which were almost universal in the 1920s to knee socks and ankle socks which became more important in the 1930s. Note that knee socks were called golf socks and were for boys. They were turn-over-top socks with patterns on the turn over tops.
