French Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1900

Figure 1.--The Nouveles Gallerie department store in Paris during 1900 offered several sailor suit outfits with blounced knickers to age 12. An older long pants style was available for boys in colleges (secondary schools).

French mail order catalogs and clothing advertisements offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. Boys commonly wore sailor hats and suits. Department stores offered a wide range of sailor suits for boys, often in sizes up to about 12 years. Blouced knicker suits called "culottes" were the most common. Sailor caps were also very popular. An sailor suit syle was also available for older boys attending colleges (secondary schools). These look like military school uniforms.

Headwear

Boys wore both sailor hats and caps as well as a range of what looked to us today as rather mature headwear for a boy.
