German Pre-School Outfits (1908)

Figure 1.-- A HBC reader has sent us an 1908 illustration of pre-school outfits for a boy and girl. The illustrations suggest older children, but the accompanying text specifies pre-school children. We are unsure of the source. The boy is wearing an overcoat with a cape. There is heavy aplique of fancy frogs. He is holding a cap, perhaps a tam. We can't see what he is wearing under the coat. But we can see he is wearing bloomer knickers and long stockings. The girl is wearing a dress covered by a pinafore. There looks to be embroidered design at the top and bottom hem of her pinafore. She is also wearing long stockings.

Rückansicht Abb.25. Schnitt u. Beschreibung: Nr.XXI." That translates as, "Spring overcoat for boys of 3 - 5 years. Back view illustr.25. Cut and description # XXI." The girl's outfit is described as, "Schürze mit Durchbruch Verzierung für kleine Mädchen. Naturgroße Durchbruch Verzierung Abb.23." That means, "Pinafore with trim decoration for small girls. Natural size trim decoration illustr.23." Note that the German word Schürze is used for both apron and pinafore. The source of these deawings is not indicated. We think they may come from magazines advertising patterns, but we are unsure about this.
