Montgomey Ward Headwear: Norse-style/Hunting Caps (Fall-Winter, 1940-41)


Figure 1.-- Wards refers to these cold-weather brimmed-caps as "Norse Sttyle". I am not real sure that they were actually a popular style in Norway. Here we mean bith the style and the plaid pattern. Perhaps our Norwegian readers will know more. I also do not think that people actually referred to these caps as Norse or Norse-style caps. Actually I'm not sure if they actually had a popular name. Some people might have called them "hynting caps". The caps actually have the look of plaid baseball caps with ear flaps. Wards offered four different styles.

Swinging Ear-muffs

The Wards ad copy read, "Swinging Ear-muffs. Warm All-Wool fabric. 89 cents. Lustrous Laskin lamb fur muffs swing way up out of the way when not needed. 22-oz. blanket weight Wool, harmonizing plaid Cotton Suede lining. Unbreakable rubbed visor. Bright colors boys like, plus warmth. Sizes: 6 3/8, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. State head size. 35 B 9455--Red Plaid, red ear muffs. 35 B 9456--Blue Plaid, blue ear-muffs. Ship. wt. each 10z. Each 89 cents.

Bright Corduroy Plaids

The Wards ad copy read, "Bright Corduroy Plaids 74 cents Laskin Lamb Fur Trimmed. Long-wearing narrow wale corduroy in tie-top style. Soft cotton Duvetyn lining. Unbreakable canvas visor. Padded crown panels may be tied under chin. Sizes: 6 3/8, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. State size. 35 B 9445--Red and black plaid. 35 B 9446--Blue and Black Plaid. 35 B 9447--Green and black plaid. Ship. wt. each 13 oz. Each 74 cents."

Norse Style Cap

The Wards ad copy read, "Norse Style Cap 49 cents. Colorful Plaid Corduroy. Narrow wale Corduroy, lined with Cotton Suede Cloth. Cotton fleece lined earlaps.
