Some of our HBC readers have commented that while HBC is extremely informative that it is a little on the overly serious academic side. He has suggested that readers contribute humorous captions for some of their favorite images. HBC admits to a lack of humor and is more than willing to provide a forum for readers that are amused or a least bemused by some of the historical images.

The Image

This photograph was taken at in the village near a British preparatory school. The village bridge is very chracteristic of northern England and Scotland. The boys here have probably just attended services in the village church and are on their way back to school.

Preparatory schools in Britain are elementary-level schools, created to prepare younger boys for Britain's public schools--actually exclusive fee-paying private schools. A school located near a village like this would be a boarding school. Almost all of the British public schools had strict uniform policies. Prep schools as part of the prepartion for public schools, also gaver attention to uniforms. The uniforms at these schools were often quite colorful, but varied from school to school. The standard uniform was a peaked cap, blazer, tie, short pants, and kneesocks. The formality of this school uniform combined with wearing short pants and kneesocks will probably look funny to many modern boys.

Captions

HBC readers have suggested the following captions:

The headmaster is drowning!

Bad trumpeters contest.
