Children's Literature: Sweden

Figure 1.--Elsa Beskow's picture books include humanized flora, dwarfs, children, etc. A very well-known title of hers was "Hänschen im Blaubeerwald" ("Little Hans in the Blue Berry Forest"). Beskow not only wrote the stories, but illustrated them all herself.

We have very limited information on Sweden. We have noticed some charming books. One particularly imaaginative author is Elsa Beskow. We have very little information on types of Swedish children's books. Americanns and the English speaking world in general are not familiar with Swedish children's literature. Sweden is a small country, the language is not commonly spoken outside Scandinavia. We have some very limited information. Generally speaking Swedish books are more commonly translated into German than English. Thus while German children are familiar with Swedish children's books, English and American children are not. Hopefully our Swedish readers will provide us more information about children's literature.

Language Limitations

Americanns and the English speaking world in general are not familiar with Swedish children's literature. Sweden is a small country, the language is not commonly spoken outside Scandinavia. We have some very limited information. Generally speaking Swedish books are more commonly translated into German than English. Thus while German children are familiar with Swedish children's books, English and American children are not.

Types

We have very limited information on the different types of Swedish children's literature. There are of course fiction and non-fiction books. We have found some fiction books, but know nothing about non-fiction at this time. We have noticed some charming individual titles. Some of the best known are the Pipi Longstockings books by Astrid Lindgrin. She also wrote books about a boy named Emil. There were also storybooks. We do not know of any children's magazines are periodicals, but our information is very limited. Hopefully our Swedish readers will provide us more information about children's literature.

Authors

We are just beginning to collect information on Swedish authors. We know of only a few Swedish authors at this time, but of course Sweden had only a smll population. Hopefully our Swedish readers will tell us about authors they enjoyed as children. One particularly immaginative author is Elsa Beskow who is especially loved in Sweden. Perhaps best known to foreign readers is Astrid Lindgren who is best known for her Pippi Longstockings books. And of course many foreign authors had their books printed in Sweden.
