Vintage Clothing: Sears Ucanttear Bright Blue Sailor Tunic--Garments

Figure 1.--This bright blue sailor tunic was worn by a boy about 5 years old. Note the belt loop on the back. These suits almost always had ornamental belts. I was the Sears Ucanttear brand.

Here we have a sailor tunic. This was a nearly complete outfit. The only item missing is the belt worn with the tunic suit. The various items of the tunic suit give us a good look at what the outfits were like. There was even a matching cap which often was not the case. An overcoat was found with it, but this would have been purchased separately. The tunic suit is not heavy material, so the two might not have been worn together. The blue sailors jacket is just a little smaller than an overcoat that was worn with it. The bloomer knickers match the tunic. They are 17 inches long. The dickey that goes around the neck has button holes that match up to the jacket. The matching sailors tam is 12 inches across the top, 7 inches across the part that goes on the head. There is also a black sailor scarfe. The lined overcoat is 11 inches between the arm seams on the back, it is about 26 inches long. There is a red arm insignia. The collar is velvet.

Sailor Tunic

Here we have a sailor tunic. The items here are nearly complete outfit. The only item missing is the belt worn with the tunic suit. We know there was a belt because there are belt loops on the back of the tunic. The belts were made in both identical or contrasting material. The various items of the tunic suit give us a good look at what the outfits were like. There was even a matching cap which often was not the case. The bloomer knickers match the tunic. The suits were commonly worn with bloomer knickers. There were draw strings an the knee hem that gave the bloomer effect. Some may have had elastic. They are 17 inches long. The dickey that goes around the neck has button holes that match up to the jacket. The matching sailors tam is 12 inches across the top, 7 inches across the part that goes on the head. There is also a black sailor scarfe.

Overcoat

An overcoat was found with the sailor tunic here. This would have been purchased separately. The tunic suit is not heavy material, so the two might not have been worn together. They may have been found together just because they were clothes worn by the same boy and not because they were always worn together. Weare guesing the boy here also had a tunic suit dobe in a heavier material. The blue sailors jacket is just a little smaller than the overcoat and thus could be worn with it. The lined overcoat is 11 inches between the arm seams on the back, it is about 26 inches long. There is a red arm insignia. The collar is velvet.
