British Royalty: Richard Duke of Gloucester--Family

Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester married Lady Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott, a daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry (1935). Lady Alice and her family were family friends of the Royal Family. Her father had been a fellow midshipman of the future king George V. The Duke and Duchess had two sons, Prince William of Gloucester (1941-1972) and Prince Richard of Gloucester (1944- ). Richard was born at Northampton, he was christened Richard Alexander Walter George. The boys were to Australia, where for 2 years (1945-47) their father was Governor-General. We do not know a great deal about their clothing. Prince William and Prince Richard when they were young wore kilts in public more often than not. For frmal occasions they commonly wore them with white ankle socks and formal patent leather strap shoes. Prince William died in a tragic airplane crash without a heir. As a result, Richard is now the Duke of Gloucester. He succeeded his father in June 1974.

Lady Alice

Lady Alice and her family were family friends of the Royal Family. Her father had been a fellow midshipman of the future king George V. She was born Montagu House, London on Christmas Day (1901). That is not a good birtday for a child as birthday celebrations and presents tend to get short shift. She attended Saint James Boarding School (1921- ). Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester married Lady Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott, a daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry (1935). She began workng with the Red Cross and the Order of St. John (1939). She was named to lead the Women's Royal Air Force (1940). Primce William was born (1941) and Richard arrived (1944). At the end of the War she given the honorary title of Air Chief Commandant, served as Colonel-in-Chief or deputy Colonel-in-Chief of a dozen regiments in the British Army (1945). She published her memoirs, The Memoirs of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (1981). The royal family held a ceremony to acknowledge Lady Alice's centennial birthday (2001). She died in her sleep at Kensington Palace (2004). She was 102 years old. .
