British Royalty: Prince John--Relationships

Figure 1.--This sensitive portrait shows Prince John with his older brother Prince George. Itvsuggests a very close relationship between the two. Notice that Prince John wears the white sailor suit he was commonly photographe in while his brother wears a kilt. Note that Prince John wears long pants in this portrait. His brothers at this age appear to wear kneepants sailor suits.

I also have few details on John's relationship, with his siblings. The few photographs I have show that he was generally dresses like his brothers at similar ages. Prince John probably did not know have a particularly close relationship with his two oldest brothers. But he appaers to have had more interaction with Henry and George who were closer to him in age. Prince George seems to have been particularly close to him, but I do not have any information on this. This is a topic we hope to persue in more depth. The image here certainly does suggest a close relationship between the two. Also note that John wears a sailor suit while his older brother wears a kilt. Prince John appears dresse in this white sailor suit very commonly. Of all the family relationships, the one with Queen Alexandra was probably the most intimate.

Grandmother

Of all the family relationships, the one with Queen Alexandra was probably the most intimate. After Alexandra was widowed in 1910, Prince John was one of the few real delights of her life. She was particularly drawn to him, not only because he was he youngest child but because of his debilitating epilepsy. She was able to coddle him as much as she pleased. She constantly refers to him in her family letters. She spent a great deal of time in London, but whenever she was at Sandininham, she would send for "the dear and precious little boy". They would have "tea", play games, and listen to music. [Battiscombe, p. 279.]
