French Royalty: Louis Joseph's Clothing: Skelton Suits

Figure 1.--This painting shows Louis Joseph whn he was about 5 or 6 yers of age. It would have been pinted about 1786-87, a few years before the Revolution. We are unsure as to who the artist is.

Available images show Louis-Joseph wearing skeleton suits at an early age. Most of the available images show him wearing this same style. We rarely see him wearing anything else. There were many different suits, but the tyling ws quite similar. The skeleton suits all have open ruffled collar. Almost all images of Louis-Joseph show him wearing a large open ruffled collar of various descriptions. Many images do not show the pants he was wearing, but we believe that they were all long pants suits. The skeleton suits notably have long pants. Many early sleleton suits depicted in British portraits during the late 18th century had knee breeches. The French princes, however, seem to have only worn long pants skeleton suits. We are unsure how common these skeleton suits were for other French boys. Certainly the aristocratic boys wore them. Weare not yet sure about other French boys.
