French Royalty: Louis XVII--Governess

Figure 1.--The royal children were cared for by nurses and governesses. Here we do not yet have details, although surely some such records must exist. One painting exists reportedly showing Louis-Charles with a giverness and a pet dog. It may be the Dauphnne with Madame Tourzel.

The royal children were cared for by nurses and governesses. Here we do not yet have much information, although surely some such records must exist. One painting exists reportedly showing Louis-Charles with a governess and a pet dog. We cannot conform the accuracy. A HBC reader believes that thew woman depicted may be Madame Tourzel. The owner believes that the portrait was done by Madame Vegée LeBrun who painted most of the intimate family portaits for the Queen. It does not, however, look to HBC like her work. Another governess for the royal children was Madame de Polignac. She was a very intimate friend of the Queen and died soon after hearing of her death.
