German Royalty: Wilhelm II Children's Clothes--Highland Kilts

Figure 1.--Wilhelm II's younger children were photographed here about 1895. The children are from the left: Oskar, Joachim, and Victoria Luise--the only daughter. The boys wear the same Highland outfits worn by their English cousins. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

We also notice the boys wearing kilts, but we do not know how common that was. Pne portrait shows Prince Oskar and Prince Joachim wearing Highland kuilts with Glengary caps. We are unsure how common this was. We only have one such image. Notably it the outfit is virtually identical to the Highland kilt outfits worn by the children of Prince George (future George V). We are not sure if the boys here are wearing it as fancy dress or perhaps in hor of their visiting royal English cousins. We suspect that the kilt was not a common article of atire of the German royals, but here we have no real information. A HBC reader has also noted few images of the German orinves in kilts. He writes, "As the public would have copied the styles of the aristocracy, is it safe to assume that Scottish dress was worn by other boys." Yhos of course might be less so if the princes did not commonly wear kilts or if it was considered a family matter.
