Crown Prince Rupprecht's Son Luitpold's Clothing: Satin Kneepant Outfits

Figure 1.--This portrait of Prince Rupprecht's son Luitpold was probably taken about 1910. He looks to be about 9-10 years old. He wears a light-colored satin kneepants suit with short socks. Note the large rounded lace collar nd long hair.

Luitpold had light-clored satin suits with kneepants. These suiyts look to be white or cream colored. We have noted several differentcollars, usually with matching wrist trim. As a young boy hevhad a ide, pleated white collar. More commonly he wore a lace collar with these satin suits. All of the images with these large collars show matcing wrist trim on the sleeves. These do not appear to be blouses, but rather pinned on lace trim. The light-colored suits were above the knee, kneepannts suits. They were worn with both short socks and long stockings. I don't think the choice of hosiery with these suits was a seasonal matter. As he got closer to his teen years he more commonly wore the long stockings. We note that these light-colored suits were normally worn with not open, but very wide collars. The dark satin suits wer buttoned to the collar. We also note that the light-colored, but not the dark-colored satin suits, were worn with fancy sashes. This could be because Luitpold only wore dark satin suits as an older boy. The available images of these sain sits show him wearing light-colored omes until he is abut 12 years old.
