European Royalty: Russia--The Tsaraevich Alexei's Sailor Suit Garments

Figure 1.--Alexei is seen here in 1909 wearing perhaps the middy blouse style that he most commonly wore. Note the stripped dickey.

HBC has noted Alexei wearing most standard sailor suit sailor suit garments, including caps, middy blouses, and reefer jackets. While he commonly wore sailor caps, I have no noted photographs of him in sailor hats. He wore several different styles of middy blouses. His pants also varied, but primarily based upon his age. After he joined his father at the front, he seems to have stopped wearing sailor suits.

Headwear

While he commonly wore sailor caps, I have no noted photographs of him in sailor hats. We have noted two types of caps. Presumably both were styles actually worn by Russian sailors. As a younger boy he wore a soft white cap. As an older boy he wore both white and dark flat-top cap. Both were worn with streamers. I'm not sure what was written on the cap band where the name of a sailor's ship commonly appears.

Middy Blouses

He wore several different styles of middy blouses. He had both white and dark middy blouses. The one he was most commpnly photographed in, and thus presumably wore most commonly, was a very plain white middy blouse with a blue "V" collar and flap with white stripes. The collars to his white middy blouses came in different colors, there are both light and dark colored collors. I'm not sure what the colors as only black and white photographs are available. Perhaps they were just differet shades of blue. There was matching detailing on the cuffs. There was no other elements to the blouse and it was often not worn with the commonly worn scarve. There were also no accessories like a brass whistle which was popular with American boys wearing sailor suits.

Dickie

The dickie Alexei commonly wore was the one with equally spaced broad stripes. This was the style worn by Russian sailors.I'm not sure what the colors were. Actually this may have been a kind of undershirt rather than a dickey.

Scarves

Alexeis commonly did not wear scarves with his sailor suits. I'm not sure if this was always the case.

Coats

Alexei wore reefer jackets with his sailor suits during the winter.

Pants

His pants also varied, but primarily based upon his age. As a younger boy he sometimes wore white short pants with his white suits. As an older boy he almost always wore long dark pants. I have not notice him wearing bell bottoms.

Hosiery

One image as a younger boy shows him wearing short white socks with a white short pants. I'm not sure what kind of socks he normally wore with his long pants. We note that the movie Nicholas and Alexander showed him wearing dark kneesocks with dark short pants. We can not yet cionfirm that he actually wore kneesocks and shorts.

Footwear

We have little information on his footwear here. We did notice him wearing strap shoes as a younger boy with white socks and short pants.
