Indian Schools: Regions

Figure 1.--Here we see primary school children in a remote Indian village (Nethrapalli, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh State) walking to school in the morning.

India is a very large, diverse country. We are not sure how centralized the education system is, but there are probably substantial regional differences in the schools. The regions affect income levels, rethnicity, climaste, language, religion, and other factors. Many different languages are spoken in India. All of these affect education. The two official languages ae Hindi and English. We are not sure to what extent the many local lasnguages are used in the schools.

Kerala

Kerala is a state in southwestern India. Throughout southern India many boys and men wear traditional clothing, especially in rural areas. I'm not entirely sure why, but the fact that it is very inexpensive is pronably a factor. More boys than men wear western clothing in many areas. Here a factor is the schoolds. School uniforms for boys almost always are western styles. Many children go barefoot, particularly in villages' schools.
