Canadian Schoolwear: Chronology--The 1980s

Figure 1.--This is a French Canadian primary school class in 1986. The boys wear colorful long-sleeved poloshirts and "T" shirts, plaid shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and jeans. Most of the girls wear dresses.

We notice that in the 1980s boys commpnly wore colorful long-sleeved poloshirts and "T" shirts, plaid shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and jeans. Canadian children are virtually indestinguishable from American children. Some of the girls still wear dresses to class. Girls for casual wear were lmuch ess likely to wear dresses.

Primary Class (1986)

A Canadian parent writes, "As you can see, boys are more traditional than girls (figure 1). in 1986, many girls like my daughter were still wearing dresses even if some were usually in pants. My daughter is at the center on first rank in grayish stripped blue dress. She was also in corduroy pants like those I wore when young for half the time. Her best friend was Franco-Spanish, Eva, in blue sweater just at the left of Anne-Marie. It is not a high class affluent school but West Island is more opulent than around. These classroom pictures are invaluable to get a look of the evolution of clothing."

School Exchange (1988)

A Canadian reader tells us, "My daughter in the 6th grade at an elementary (primary) school was in an English immersion class even if the school was French . At the end of the year, an exchange with a French immersion English School in Ontario resulted in a travel at Oshawa, near Toronto followed by a visit from the pupils at Pointe-Claire. During this visit, there was a lot of verbal exchanges between kids and a day at Québec City by bus. I pictured all this travel. But my main point in writing you is the group picture I took just before the departure after the week visit in Québec Province."
